Meet Daughter of ROBERT C. RAFFERTY I am honored and excited to be invited to attend the upcoming service held this November 10th in River Rouge.I will be coming from Kansas to honor my dad and the other 28 crewmen. My father was the ” Old Cook” referred to in the Gordon Lightfoot song. There will be so many events having to do with the FITZ I hope to be able to fit it all in. I think it’s great to include the school kids learning about the Great Lakes and the ships that have sailed on them. I grew up in Toledo Ohio and watched from many ports my dads ship sail off with a load of iron ore or coal. Those good memories never go away. Hope to see you there. All are welcome to honor and remember that fateful night. Pam Johnson Daughter of ROBERT C. RAFFERTY

My father was also one of the crew members of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Only he was not on this ship that night. I will always remember the tone in my father’s voice as he tells of the demise of the ship he once worked upon in the seventies himself. The tone was of absolute shock and disbelief. Unfortunately my father passed away himself 2 months later while in port in Ohio. He died with his ship just as the 29 crew members had with the SS Edmund Fitzgerald. Only there bodies were never released from the icy grave of Lake Superior. The wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald remembered.

Michigan Wine Making Getting National Attention

Michigan wine making is getting national attention. Michigan may seem like a strange place to find some of the finest wines in the country, but it is. With Michigan leading the nation in the worst economic state, wineries are booming. Charlie Gibson of ABC World News has just done a segment on Michigan Winemaking.

Northern Michigan or anywhere along the Lake Michigan shoreline have sprung up with some of the best vineyards around. Michigan now has a $300 million wine industry. Fifteen years ago there were only about 17 wineries throughout Michigan, now today there are nearly seventy. These wineries together product around 1 million gallons of wine a year.

Michigan’s location is what makes this the ideal place to have the best wineries. Michigan’s best wineries are near the 45th parallel. The same location as some of the best wine found in France, Italy and Oregon. The closer the wine is made to the 45th parallel, the better the wine. It is expected that Michigan wines will be as great as wines in any other country.

Even in this bad economy wine sales are going up. Also bringing revenue to Michigan is the wine tasting tours that have risen along the lake shore of Lake Michigan. Northern Michigan’s burgeoning wine industry has taken a front row seat and has the respect of some of the best wine tasting experts in the country. This is some pretty exciting news for the state of Michigan and its economy. It is no wonder that Michigan wine making is getting national attention.
